Barbara Rohr

Barbara Rohr was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, but, as the daughter of a military father, also lived in Ohio, France, and England. Her growing up years were spent primarily in Maryland and Virginia, but she now calls the Old Dominion her home.

As Ms. Rohr was a business major in college, her career path first led into the realm of restaurant management. She quickly realized that was not the world for which she was intended. Barb pursued a Masters in English Education. A valued mentor professor suggested that she become a teacher.

Assigned to West Gate Elementary School as a Reading Specialist, Ms. Rohr has attended Longwood College, Old Dominion University, and George Mason University. While this is Barb’s 26th year in Prince William County Public Schools, it is her 31st year as a professional educator.

Ms. Rohr became a building representative/association leader due to her belief that “it is just as important to advocate for teachers as it is to advocate for students.” She knows firsthand that teachers lead incredibly busy lives and fully comprehends the importance of having an informed member at the building level. This level of support not only “makes the association more visible,” but “provides a personal connection to the association.”

Barb has been a member of the Prince William Education Association (PWEA) for as long as she has been teaching in PWCPS. Prior to teaching in Prince William, Ms. Rohr was employed in Portsmouth Public Schools, where she was also a local education association member. While her active participation has fluctuated throughout the years, she believes membership is just as critically important now as it was then. In her words, “PWEA provides a collective and powerful voice for teachers and support professionals” and the association’s “commitment is to education for the good of all.”

In Barb’s spare time, she enjoys a variety of activities including: reading, cooking, bike-riding, walking, prospecting for gems in thrift stores, and “pretending to know more about home repair” than she actually does. After work each day, Ms. Rohr spends quality time with her two dogs, Luka (a 10-year-old Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen) and CJ (a 15-year-old terrier mix). She spends as much time as she possibly can with her husband and family as, according to Barb, LIFE IS SHORT! Her recommendation? “Do what you love!”
