PWEA-Nominated Local Activist wins VEA Award

PWEA was proud to nominate Adelle Settle, founder of "Settle the Debt" for the VEA Fitz Turner Award for Outstanding Contributions in Intergroup Relations.

Fitz Turner Award for Outstanding Contributions in Intergroup Relations. This award is named for the former president of the predominantly black Virginia Teachers Association, which merged with VEA in 1967. It honors an individual or organization that’s contributed to the enhancement of human and civil rights in Virginia.

This year’s winner, Adelle Settle, is helping wipe out school lunch debt for some 800 students in Prince William County. The organization she founded in 2017, called Settle the Debt, is now an official nonprofit continuously raising money, over $100,000 so far, to help children from low-income homes get healthy meals at school. Settle the Debt’s goal is to pay off all school lunch debt in Prince William schools this year.

The PWEA Board of Directors met with Ms.Settle at the May Representative Assembly held via Zoom on May 28, and presented Settle the Debt with a $1,000 check to aid her organization's efforts.
